Dodger, Endemol ink legit deal
The new company, which will produce theater around the world, is designed to give Dodger a bigger role in the European legit industry, while boosting Endemol's presence in North America. Michael David, partner and co-founder of Dodger, said the venture "will provide a significant capital base" and that the two parent companies "will benefit from the alliance with greater opportunities in numerous markets globally."
Dodger and the Dutch TV/theatrical production company have partnered before to co-produce the London and German stagings of "The Who's Tommy" and the London production of "Hamlet" starring Ralph Fiennes that transferred for a limited run to Broadway in 1995. Specific upcoming projects of Dodger Endemol were not disclosed.
Overseeing the new company will be a board consisting of David, Endemol co-owner Joop van den Ende and Endemol financial director Aat Schouwenaar. Robin de Levita, the Gotham-based CEO of Endemol Theater Prods. in North America, is expected to play a key role in the venture.
De Levita called the venture "a unique international strategic alliance" that will provide for Endemol's "expansion into the North American market."
Dodger is among the most prolific independent producers of stage fare on Broadway and the road. Current Broadway productions include "The King and I," "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" and "Once Upon a Mattress."
Endemol, Europe's largest indie TV and legit producer, and van den Ende have produced more than 70 plays and musicals in Europe. The Dutch giant is currently repped on Broadway as a co-producer of "Victor/Victoria."
