Swedes bestow Gold Bugs

In Sweden's equivalent to the Oscars, most of the Swedish Guldbagge, or Gold Bugs, were given out Monday night to a trio of local hits --- "Hamsun," "Juloratoriet" (The Christmas Oratorio) and "Jagarna." (The Hunters).

In keeping with the country's attempt to encourage more commercially minded filmmaking, this year's 25-strong jury for the Guldbagge was selected from industry professionals instead of being culled from film critics whose agenda tends to be more intellectual. Some 26 feature films were made in Sweden last year and were considered for awards.

In addition, special funding is being made available through the Swedish Film Institute for local films that perform well at the box office.

The list of Guldbagge winners follows:

Film: "Hamsun," producer Erik Crone.

Director: Kjell Sundvall, "Jagarna."

Actress: Ghita Norby, "Hamsun."

Actor: Max Von Sydow, "Hamsun."

Supporting actress: Lena Endre, "Jagarna."

Screenplay: Per Olov Enquist, "Hamsun."

Cinematography: Harald Paalgard, "Juloratoriet."

Foreign Film: "Breaking the Waves," directed by Lars von Trier.

Short film: "I Skuggan Av Solen," directed by Susanna Edwards.

Artistic contribution to Swedish film: Horst Stadlinger for makeup and special effects.

Ingmar Bergman prize: Nils Melander
