Sci-Fi, USA snare MGM pix

'Rainman,' 'Mad Max' and more in package

USA Network and its sister Sci-Fi Channel have jointly acquired a package of 28 theatrical drama, sci-fi and horror titles -- a few of them genre classics -- from the vaults of MGM Domestic TV Distribution, buying up the exclusive network window for a handful of that group of films.

Going to the cablenets as part of the package are high-profile feature titles, including the Oscar-winning "Rain Man," "Mad Max," "The Amityville Horror" and "Road House," with USA snaring the exclusive network window for Richard Gere's recently released "Red Corner" and "Species 2" (to be released in April) and Sci-Fi Channel getting the exclusive on "Lord of Illusion" and "Hackers."

List of titles also includes "Poltergeist 3," "Robocop 3," "Meteor," "Pumpkinhead," "Empire of the Ants," "The Island of Dr. Moreau," "Futureworld," "Moon 44" and "Leviathan."

USA Networks entertainment prexy Rod Perth called the acquisition "an important movie package, particularly for Sci-Fi Channel."
