BECK TAKES OVER L.A
Publishing vet mag's new editor-in-chief
Beck --- who also has held editorial positions at Connoisseur, Fame and Interview magazines --- takes over for Michael Caruso, who was fired from the mag's top editorial post March 26.
The Yale grad also has collaborated with designer J-C Suares on a dozen books, including "Uncommon Grace: Photographs and Reminiscences of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis," "Hollywood Lovers" and "Hollywood Kids."
Fairchild also announced that former Buzz magazine editor Glynis Costin has been named to the newly created position of creative director of Los Angeles.
"Spencer and Glynis are two of the best editors in the business," said Patrick McCarthy, chairman and editorial director of Fairchild. "They will bring energy, excitement and a sophisticated perspective to the magazine."
This marks Costin's second stint with Fairchild. She previously served as Milan bureau chief for W and Women's Wear Daily, and before that, she was the West Coast fashion and features editor for the two Fairchild publications.
Costin most recently worked as style editor of Buzz magazine and as a freelance writer for such magazines as In-Style, Vogue and Elle Decor. She also is the author of "Shabby Chic," a home decor book.
While both appointments take effect immediately, Beck must relocate to L.A. from New York.
The new hirings come at a time when Fairchild is looking to convert Los Angeles from a feature-laden city mag to a fashion-lifestyle publication. A month before Caruso was fired from the mag, Joan McCraw resigned as president and publisher of Los Angeles after Fairchild gained oversight of the magazine as part of parent company Disney's restructuring of its publishing operations.
