Edward C. Carfagno, a three-time Academy Award-winning art director and production designer, died Dec. 28 in Woodland Hills following a lengthy illness. He was 89.

Carfagno's career spanned five decades and included numerous Oscar nominations and Oscars for "The Bad and the Beautiful" (1952), "Julius Caesar" (1953) and "Ben Hur" (1959).

A Los Angeles native and USC graduate, Carfagno spent 46 of his 50-year career at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Carfagno collaborated on the set design of many feature productions including "The Barkleys of Broadway," "Neptune's Daughter," "Quo Vadis," "The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm," "Viva Las Vegas," "The Cincinnati Kid" and "Looking for Mr. Goodbar."

He also collaborated as art director with Clint Eastwood on several films including "Heartbreak Ridge."

Carfagno is survived by a son and two daughters.
