CPB grant buys 'Jazz'

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Corp. for Public Broadcasting announced a $1 million grant Tuesday to film-maker Ken Burns for a 12-hour documentary on the history of jazz.

The eight-part project, which will explore jazz's development through the stories of men and women who created it, will be broadcast in 2000. Burns, creator of the award-winning documentaries "The Civil War" and "Baseball," said "Jazz" will "ask fundamental questions about the soul of the country."

The Middle-East International Film Festival kicks off this fall.
