SAG sends out awards ballots

4th annual awards show set for March 8 at Shrine Exposition Center L.A.

More than 1,000 performances by film and TV actors are eligible for 1997 Screen Actors Guild awards, the union announced.

The 1,086 performances that meet the guild's eligibility requirements were seen in 143 feature-length movies and 241 primetime television and cable programs, said Yale Summers, chairman of SAG's awards committee.

A list of the eligible performances has been mailed to the guild's nominating committee of 4,200 randomly selected members, who will nominate achievements in 13 categories. Nominations ballots will be mailed to the members today. The number of submissions for awards consideration has grown for the fourth consecutive year, Summers said.

"We are very encouraged by this increase in the number of submissions," Summers said. "With so many talented actors at the starting gate it promises to be a great race for the nominations."

Guild officials will announce the nominations on Jan. 27. After that, SAG's entire active membership of 90,000 will determine the winners.

SAG's fourth annual awards show takes place on March 8 at the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles.
