TOKYO - Sony Corp.'s Sony Computer Entertainment unit plans to begin producing its PlayStation videogame machine in Mexico by summer, a company official said.
Last year, Sony Computer halted PlayStation production at its San Diego factory and shifted production back to Japan.
Teruhisa Tokunaga, representative director and president of Sony Computer Entertainment, said the shift originally took place because the company needed to quickly increase the production of PlayStation machines, adding that Japanese workers were more experienced at producing the products quickly and efficiently.
Tokunaga said production at San Diego, which he said was in small volume, had always been intended to pave the way for production at the Mexican factory.
Sony Computer Entertainment has sold 11 million PlayStation machines as of January, Tokunaga said.
