H'w'd's Berlin wall

'Rosewood' preem among U.S. fest entries

BERLIN --- The Berlin Intl. Film Festival (Feb. 13-24) has just put the finishing touches on its competition lineup, which will include a selection of pics from Hollywood majors. (A list of the European entries to the com-petition appeared in the Jan. 22 edition of Daily Variety.)

The world premiere of John Singleton's "Rosewood" starring Jon Voight and Ving Rhames will take place at this year's Berlinale. The film is based on the true story of a 1922 race-related massacre in Rosewood, Fla. Issues of hatred and intolerance also are the themes of Nicholas Hytner's version of the Arthur Miller play "The Crucible," Spike Lee's "Get On the Bus" and "William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet" from Baz Luhrmann. Leonardo DiCaprio, who plays Romeo, will attend the festival along with other cast members.

Stars come out

Woody Harrelson and Larry Flynt will be in Berlin for the screening of "The People vs. Larry Flynt," Milos Forman's biopic about the controversial publisher of Hustler magazine. Jack Nicholson, star of the out-of-competition sci-fi sendup "Mars Attacks!" also is expected to put in an appearance at this year's Berlinale.

Rounding out the list of competition films are Brazilian helmer Bruno Barreto's "O que ι isso, companheiro" (Four Days in September), starring Alan Arkin as a U.S. ambassador kidnapped in Rio de Janeiro; Spanish director Montxo Armendariz's coming-of-age story "Secretos del corazσn" (Secrets of the Heart); and Italo helmer Marco Bellocchio's version of the Heinrich von Kleist classic "Il Principe di Homburg" (The Prince of Homburg).
