Symposium to examine H'wood's 'Money Trail'

The 22nd annual UCLA Entertainment Symposium, titled "The Full Monty: Exposing the Hollywood Money Trail," will take place Jan. 30-31 at the Westwood campus.

Panelists will debate Hollywood's financial issues in a series of seminars over the two days. Among panelists will be Chris Pula, the recently deposed theatrical marketing chief at Warner Bros.

The symposium aims to provide insight into such areas as alternate sources of motion picture financing, network licensing deals with production companies, foreign subsidies and the investment banking community's view of Hollywood.

Among subjects for discussion Jan. 30 is the "impact of vertical integration on revenue patterns and operations," according to the schedule of events.

The panel discussing that subject will cover the effects of industry consolidation on matters including licensing deals with production companies, production costs and talent arrangements, and how hit pictures are identified and marketed.

Pula will be joined on that panel by Showtime Network business affairs exec VP Melinda Benedek and former NBC Enterprises prez John Agolia.

The following day, panel discussions will include "Wall Street: Financing the Entertainment Industry;" "Above-the-Line in Television" and "Above-the-Line Compensation in Features."

All meetings will take place at Schoenberg Hall.
