Art directors guild names noms

"The English Patient," "The Birdcage," "The Crucible," "Mars Attacks!" and "Hamlet" have been nominated for the first Excellence in Production Design Awards, to be held on Feb. 15.

The fete is being held by the Motion Picture and Television Art Directors Local 876.

The nominees for excellence in production design are: Stuart Craig for "The English Patient"; Bo Welch for "The Birdcage"; Lilly Kilvert for "The Crucible"; Wynn Thomas for "Mars Attacks!"; and Tim Harvey for "Hamlet."

On the TV side, the nominees are: Richard Hankins for "NYPD Blue"; Herman Zimmerman for "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine"; Roy Christopher for "Frasier"; Hub Braden for "Mrs. Santa Claus"; and Jan Scott for "Summer of Ben Tyler."

The society also will recognize art directors and assistant art directors involved in each of the nominated projects.

The awards will be held at the Sheraton Universal.

The local, which was incorporated in 1937, has about 650 members.
