MTV Films, Jefferson to 'Party'
The comedy-drama centers around the experiences of three twentysomething black women running a hip-hop dance club in Los Angeles. The trio struggles to make the club a success despite a string of comic mishaps.
"Party" is based on a short film Jefferson directed as a grad student at UCLA, where she received the Spotlight Film Award in both 1993 and 1994. In 1995, Jefferson took home the Directors Guild of America Student Film Award.
Jefferson, who also directed the short "Left Eye's No Hero of Mine" for "HBO's Def Comedy Jam" series, has writ-ten for magazines including Vibe, Source and Rap Pages.
MTV will develop the script internally before shopping it to studios. Paramount will get first crack at the project, according to MTV's first-look deal at the studio.
MTV and Paramount's December release "Beavis and Butt-head Do America" grossed $62 million domestically.
The company is about to begin shooting on its second feature, "Dead Man on Campus," in conjunction with Gale Anne Hurd's Pacific Western Prods.
