DVD-making gets Technicolor boost
Technicolor said it will be able to master, manufacture, package and distribute more than 5 million discs a year.
The company is teaming up with Hollywood's Complete Post, also a Carlton company, which will perform DVD compression and authoring chores for the discs.
Technicolor said it would be equipped to manufacture all initial versions of the proposed DVD disc configurations, including single sided/single layer, single sided/dual layer and double sided/single layer.
The move comes at a time when Technicolor parent company Carlton is part of a consortium said to be looking to invest in New Line Cinema. Concurrently, Carlton is moving closer to a purchase of Rank Film Distributors.
New integration
Either of those scenarios would put Carlton in possession of a library of film content that could be digitized for DVD release. Furthermore, it would put Carlton in a category with media giants like Time Warner and Sony: content owners that also operate disc replicating plants.
Carlton execs wouldn't comment on any possible vertical integration.
Technicolor said it would press discs for both DVD-video and DVD-ROM, the format that would be used with home computer systems.
