Five docus up for new IFP/West award
"The Celluloid Closet," "Looking for Richard," "Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hill," "Troublesome Creek: A Midwestern" and "When We Were Kings" are the five nominees for the $20,000 award, which is funded by the Independent Film Channel and jointly sponsored by IFP/West. Andie MacDowell will present the prize at the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday in Santa Monica.
"Independent filmmakers have long been influenced by documentaries --- stylistically and through subject matter," said Dawn Hudson, executive director of IFP/West. "This award recognizes their influence and brings new resources to documentary filmmakers."
To be considered for the "Truer Than Fiction" prize include, the film must run a minimum of 70 minutes; be set and financed in the U.S.; and have at least one U.S. citizen or resident credited as writer, director or producer. Finally, in 1996 the pic must have played at least one day in a commercial theater or have been shown in one of six designated film festivals.
