Coming to Santa Monica: A summit of the writer.

Many of the industry's top writers, directors and producers are scheduled to participate in "Words Into Pictures: The 1997 Film & Television Writers Forum," a forum running May 30-June 1 organized by the Writers Guild of America Foundation.

The first-time event will include panel discussions, interviews and craft seminars on topics such as "Twister Impossible: The Movie as E-Ticket Ride," "Whose Picture Is It Anyway? The Possessory Credit" and "Who Ripped Out the TV Movie's Heart and Stomped on It?"

The event will be at Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel.

"One of the purposes is to acquaint the public with television and screenwriters," said George Kirgo, a member of the forum committee, which is chaired by Tom Schulman.

"We want writers to speak up freely about what is bugging them, and for companies to say what they want from us," he added.

Among those scheduled to be panelists are Alan Alda, Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, Steven Bochco, James L. Brooks, Cameron Crowe, Joan Didion, Frank Darabont, Danny DeVito, Lindsay Doran, John Gregory Dunne, Larry Gelbart, Gary David Goldberg, William Goldman, Buck Henry, Callie Khouri, Anthony Minghella, Ron Shelton, John Wells, James Woods, Saul Zaentz, Kenneth Ziffren, Laura Ziskin, Robert Towne, Jack Rapke, Jamie Tarses and Rob Reiner, among others.

All registered participants will have access to the Writers Trade Fair and Beachcomber Cafe, and will be invited to submit a one-page synopsis of an available project for view throughout the forum. The forum hotline number is (213) 782-4692.
