Hayek to show for Conservancy

An appearance by Salma Hayek and a Buster Keaton double feature are among the highlights of the 11th edition of the L.A. Conservancy's Last Remaining Seats. Classic American and Mexican pics will be on view in the annual series, which showcases the movie palaces in downtown's Broadway Historic Theater District.

This summer's series runs on five Wednesday nights, from June 4 to July 2. On the lineup are:

June 4: "Sherlock, Jr." (1924) and "Seven Chances" (1925), a pair of Buster Keaton comedies that will be screened at the Orpheum with live musical accompaniment. (The evening's sponsor is the Peter Norton Family Foundation.)

June 11: "Laura" (1944), the film noir starring Gene Tierney, Clifton Webb and Dana Andrews, which will unspool at the Palace Theater. (MGM and UA are sponsors.)

June 18: "Enamorada" (1946), a loose translation of "Taming of the Shrew," starring Maria Felix and Pedro Armendariz and screening at the State Theater. Thesp Salma Hayek will serve as host of the evening, which will include a cameo by politico Henry Cisneros and music by Astrid Hadad and her Los Tarzanes. (Sponsors are KVEA-TV, Councilman Richard Alatorre, the Community Redevelopment Agency and United Airlines.)

June 25: "Meet Me in St. Louis" (1944), the Judy Garland musical, which will unspool at the Los Angeles Theater. (Turner Classic Movies sponsors.)

July 2: "Animal Crackers" (1930), the Marx Brothers comedy, which will screen at the Orpheum Theater. (Sponsor is Universal.)
