Sylvester Stallone will be honored with the Charles A. Crain Career Achievement Award Jan. 10 at the Palm Springs Intl. Film Festival. Presented as part of the fest opening weekend gala, this year's salute will be hosted by Leonard Maltin.

The actor-director-writer joins a list of past honorees that includes Frank Sinatra, Sophia Loren and Richard Dreyfuss. A singular screen personality, Stallone went rapidly from secondary roles and indie leads to mainstream success with "Rocky," in 1976, which received Oscar nominations for his script and starring performance and was named best picture of the year.

With "First Blood" and the subsequent "Rambo" pictures, he established himself as an international box office star. Most recently his role as the decent if slow-witted New Jersey sheriff in "Cop Land" garnered his best personal notices in two decades.

The ninth Palm Springs fest runs Jan. 8-19.
