Studio teacher rule disputed
But there is as yet no resolution over a state Industrial Relations division "emergency regulation" that allows elementary school teachers who have only a multiple subject credential to be studio teachers. Because studio teachers are often instructing elementary and secondary school students, they previously had to hold a credential for multiple subjects and another, more specialized single subject credential."Only then can we be assured that the teacher has the flexibility and know-how to be able to teach both simple sentence structure to the third grader, and advanced chemistry to the high school-aged performer," SAG president Richard Masur said in a letter last month.
Reps from the Screen Actors Guild and Studio Teachers Local 884 met with state officials Tuesday. More meetings are expected in the coming weeks.
"The meeting exposed deep division between the unions on the one hand and the producers and the governors on the other hand," Polly Businger, business agent for Local 884, said in a statement Rosalie Zalis, Gov. Pete Wilson's rep at the meeting, could not be reached for comment.
