Franklin out as director of 'Palace'

With production set to begin at the end of the summer, Carl Franklin has dropped out of helming "Brokedown Palace" for Fox 2000.

Although Fox refused comment, Franklin's departure from the project was attributed to "creative differences." Sources close to the film said the director wanted an unknown to join the cast toplined by Claire Danes, while Fox 2000 was insisting on higher-profile thesps.

While she originally was attached to produce the pic with Adam Fields, Jesse Beaton --- Franklin's partner in the production banner Monarch Films, which has a deal with Fox 2000 --- will no longer produce. The David Arata-scripted pic is a contemporary drama set in Southeast Asia and originally was skedded to begin production Aug. 18.

Sources said Fox 2000 has begun to resubmit the "Brokedown" script to directors in hopes of getting the project back on track.
