People's fete choice: Goldberg

Whoopi Goldberg has been selected to receive the Special Tribute prize at the 24th Annual People's Choice Awards, skedded for broadcast Jan. 11 at 9 p.m. on CBS.

An Oscar winner, two-time Golden Globe winner and five-time People's Choice winner, Goldberg has appeared in 24 films, earning her Oscar for "Ghost." She has two films being readied for release in 1998: "How Stella Got Her Groove Back" and "Deep End of the Ocean."

Previous recipients of the Special Tribute honor include Michael Douglas, Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, Aaron Spelling and Rob Reiner.

Show will be produced by Walter C. Miller and directed by Louis J. Horvitz. Daily Variety columnist Army Archerd is the associate producer of "People's Choice Awards."
