Mikel Herrington (Hunter)

Longtime radio personality and voiceover artist Mikel Herrington (Hunter) died Nov. 16 in Fremont, Calif., of complications due to leukemia. He was 57.

During his lengthy career, Herrington worked at numerous top 40 radio stations in Texas, Arizona and California.

From 1971-72, Herrington worked at radio station KRLA-AM Los Angeles, where he was known as "Hot Rocks Hunter" and also "Motorcycle Mikel."

He later served as the program director for radio station KMET-FM in Los Angeles from 1972-74.

The 1978 feature "FM" was based on Herrington's reign at KMET. The TV series "WKRP in Cincinnati" also was loosely based on his exploits at KMET.

Herrington also worked as a radio program director in Oakland, San Jose and Philadelphia.

He hosted several talkshows in Northern California before retiring to become a full-time wine connoisseur.

He is survived by his wife, a son and daughter, a brother, a niece and a nephew.

In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations to the Leukemia Society.
