'Dogma' lures young faithful
A comedic fantasy set against a supernatural background, "Dogma" is about a most unusual group's battle against a pair of outcast angels.
" 'Dogma' is one of the most innovative and original screenplays I have read in years from one of the most innovative and original voices in independent film," Miramax co-chairman Harvey Weinstein said. "That the script has attracted a cast of this caliber is a testament to Kevin and his enormous talents as a writer and director."
Smith commented, "This is no doubt our most ambitious effort to date, with a cast to match. I only pray I can do the script the justice that I know these all too talented individuals will. Because if this flick doesn't pan out, it's back to register jockeying for me." Before he became a filmmaker, Smith worked as a cashier.
"Dogma" will be produced by Scott Mosier, who also produced the "New Jersey Trilogy" --- "Clerks," "Mallrats" and the recent box office hit "Chasing Amy."
Principal photography is skedded to begin in February.
