'Event' bows in U.K. with $1.7 mil B.O.
That placed the Paul Anderson-helmed pic at No. 3 behind "Men in Black," which has amassed a whammo $43.3 million through the fourth weekend (slipping just 4%), and Polygram's comedy "Bean," which has a sturdy $14.5 million through its third (up 5%).
The U.K. B.O. benefited from a three-day weekend thanks to a public- holiday Monday. Takings overall were up 10% over the previous weekend, but London cinemas had to compete with the popular Notting Hill Carnival. "Event Horizon" starts rolling out internationally from mid-September through October.
United Intl. Pictures reported "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" snared $3.6 million in four days on 271 in Spain, some 18% ahead of the predecessor's bow. "Lost World's" three-day gross was the second-highest ever in the territory behind "Independence Day." The foreign cume is $261 million.
Polygram said "Bean's" overseas total reached $46 million, including $13.8 million in Australia, $6 million in Spain, $5.2 million in Holland and a merry $894,000 in three days on 112 in Brazil.
