Loews plans Gotham 15-plex

NEW YORK -- Loews Theatres, a unit of Sony Retail Entertainment, plans to build a 15-screen multiplex in the Kips Bay area of Manhattan's East Side.

The Loews Kips Bay Theatre, which will be located at Second Avenue and 32nd Street, is scheduled to open in spring 1998. It will have a seating capacity of 3,000.

Kips Bay will be the first multiplex in Manhattan to feature stadium seating in all of its auditoriums. Other amenities include high-backed rocking-chair seats and Sony Dynamic Digital Sound systems.

Loews currently operates 10 locations and 50 screens in Manhattan under the Loews and Sony names. The circuit is also developing a 13-screen multiplex in the E Walk retail and entertainment complex that Tishman Realty & Construction Co. is building at 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue.

The Loews Theatre at E Walk, which is scheduled to open in 1999, is across the street from the site on which AMC Entertainment has plans to build a 24-screen multiplex.
