Stockwell sets 'Scandal'

Thesp-turned-writer/director John Stockwell --- who recently scripted "Breast Men" for HBO --- has inked a deal to write and direct "The Cheating Scandal" for HBO/NYC.

Suzanne de Passe will produce along with Shanna Tindal and Greg Gugliotta of Gaslight Pictures.

Pic is a social satire based on the true story of a mysterious, charismatic teacher who convinces a group of inner-city kids to cheat in order to win a state academic decathlon championship. The film aims to examine the faces of success: whether it is about winning fairly or about cheating without getting caught.

Stockwell will write and helm the project from his original research and from interviews with some of the participants of the actual incident.

DePasse Entertainment VP Laurie Parker is credited with shepherding "The Cheating Scandal" to the HBO/NYC fold. HBO/NYC execs Kerith Putnam and Tracey Kemble will supervise the project for the cabler.

Stockwell also has been hired to adapt another satire, "God Is My Broker," for New Line Cinema and producers Barry Levinson and Paula Weinstein.

Based on the novel by Christopher Buckley and John Tierney, the story is a comedy about a failed stockbroker who retreats to a monastery and discovers the fractional laws of spiritual and financial growth.

After years spent as an actor, working in such feature and TV films as "So Fine," "Top Gun," "North & South" and "Nixon," Stockwell has made a name for himself as a writer who is particularly adept at darkly humorous, eccentric tales. Most recently, he penned "Breast Men," an upcoming original pic for HBO, helmed by Lawrence O'Neill and starring David Schwimmer and Chris Cooper.

Stockwell is repped by UTA's David Kramer.
