Seldes in new role at MGM

MGM's Elisabeth Seldes is leaving her post as senior VP of production, but she'll stay attached to the stu-dio under an independent but exclusive contract to produce features for the MGM and UA units.

Under the agreement, Seldes will produce studio-assigned projects, and will bring in and develop independent features for MGM and UA Pictures, as well as some television material.

"I'll be looking for all genres and sizes, but my main focus at first will be on Christmas and summer movies, to make sure we have those movies in the pipeline," she said.

Role reversal

It will be a new professional direction for Seldes, who has always been on the studio side of the table.

"I'll be moving from buyer to producer," Seldes stated. "I'm hoping everything I've learned as a buyer can trans-fer to my new job as supplier."

MGM president Michael Nathanson said Seldes' understanding of the studio's operation will help speed the pro-duction of new properties.

Seeking balance

Seldes is leaving the studio position in order to more evenly balance the demands of work and parenthood.

"If had my druthers, she wouldn't be leaving. but this way it'll be the best of both worlds," Nathanson said.

Seldes has been with MGM since 1993, serving as VP of production and, two years later, rising to senior veep. Previously, she worked at American Zoetrope as veepee of production, and at Oliver Stone's Ixtlan Prods.
