Cassavetes retro to feature rare pix

NEW YORK --- The films of director John Cassavetes will be the subject of a retrospective that Film Comment magazine and Miramax Films will present in Gotham and Los Angeles Aug. 22-28.

"Love on the Edge: Six Films From the Legendary Independent Director John Cassavetes" will unspool in New York at the newly re-opened Paris Theatre, where Cassavetes first screened "Shadows," his low-budget indie about an interracial romance, 40 years ago. In Los Angeles, the series will take place at the Laemmle Sunset 5.

As part of the retrospective, Miramax will present a sneak preview in New York on Aug. 26 of its upcoming release "She's So Lovely," which Nick Cassavetes directed from his father's script. "Lovely," starring Sean Penn, Robin Wright Penn and John Travolta, opens nationally Aug. 29.

The sneak preview will be preceded by a panel discussion on the film legacy of John Cassavetes that will be hosted by Film Comment, which is published by the Film Society of Lincoln Center.

Other highlights of the series are new prints of the rarely seen "Minnie and Moskowitz" and "Love Streams," neither of which is available on video and neither of which has been available in 35mm for years.

"Shadows" will be part of the retrospective, as will "Husbands," "Faces" and "A Woman Under the Influence," for which Cassavetes' wife Gena Rowlands was nominated for an Oscar.

The series will travel to the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, Mass., where it will run from Aug. 29-Sept. 4.
