'Wind' tops 'White' in sales

LONDON --- Elton John's tribute to Princess Diana, "Candle in the Wind 1997," has become the most successful single of all time, shipping 31 million units worldwide in a mere 37 days.

The previous record-holder was Bing Crosby's "White Christmas," which in 55 years has sold approximately 30 million copies.

John's charity single reached No. 1 in 22 countries and has been certified nine times platinum in the U.S. and the U.K. In Canada, the single is at 20 times platinum, with fellow Commonwealth nations Australia and New Zealand at 11 and 14, respectively.

Germany was eight times platinum and Japan six. In Japan, the single was also only the second release in history to enter the combined international and domestic charts at No. 1., last done in 1976.
