Adler, 43, will report to Time Warner president Richard Parsons and will oversee a "newly configured" corporate communications department that will include media relations, internal communications, corporate identity and corporate publications.
"Ed, who has spent his entire career at Time Warner, has skillfully served as the company's chief spokesperson through two mergers," Time Warner chairman Gerald Levin and Parsons said in a statement.
Adler joined Time Inc. in 1974 as a copyboy at People magazine. He joined the corporate communications department of Time Inc. in 1983 and became media relations manager after the merger of Time and Warner Communications in 1989.
Last year he was the main spokesman for the company during Time Warner's acquisition of Turner Broadcasting Systems.
In his new role, Adler effectively replaces Todd Hullin, who quit as senior VP of communications and public affairs earlier this year.
Time Warner also named Suzanne Arden director of corporate communications, responsible for production of the annual report and for internal communications.
