Hitachi's digital disc packed with memory

TOKYO --- Hitachi Ltd. said Tuesday it has developed a random access memory digital videodisc (DVD-RAM) with a storage capacity of 4.7 gigabytes.

The new rewritable disc has a larger capacity than the 2.6 GB DVD-RAM disc proposed by the 10-company consortium that developed DVD technology, called the DVD Forum.

The Hitachi disc is compatible with the DVD Forum format for RAM discs and the non-recordable DVD-ROM (read only memory).

Hitachi plans to have their DVD-RAM disc on the market in 1999.

DVDs are being billed as replacements for videocassettes, CDs and CD-ROMs because they offer much greater storage capacity.

The Hitachi DVD-RAM disc has a greater storage capacity than the 3.0 GB of a disc format proposed by Sony, Philips and Hewlett-Packard. The trio's disc is not compatible with the DVD Forum's RAM format.
