Fiennes to star in Szabo Alliance pic

Ralph Fiennes is set to star in an untitled drama by helmer Istvan Szabo for Alliance Pictures.

Fiennes will play roles in three successive generations in the saga of a Jewish family that rises from humble origins to positions of wealth and power within the crumbling Austro-Hungarian empire.

Szabo, who wrote the script along with Israel Horovitz, has been working on the project for five years. The Hungarian director's credits include "Mephisto" (1981), which won a foreign-language film Academy Award, "Colonel Redl" (1984) and 'Hanussen."

Fiennes was Oscar-nominated for 1993's "Schindler's List" and last year's "The English Patient." His other roles include "Quiz Show" and the upcoming "Oscar and Lucinda."
