'Fireworks' to Milestone

NEW YORK --- Specialized film distributor Milestone Film has picked up all North American rights to Takeshi Kitano's award-winning film "Fireworks," also known by its Japanese title "Hana-Bi," from international sales agent Celluloid Dreams of Paris.

The story of a good cop with a violent streak, "Fireworks" won the Golden Lion at the Venice Intl. Film Festival, and makes its U.S. premiere at the New York Film Festival on Sunday.

Milestone plans to release "Fireworks" theatrically in 1998. It will open in New York on two screens before expanding to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston and Seattle.

Founded by Amy Heller and Dennis Doros in 1990, Milestone has released such foreign films in the U.S. as Mikhail Kalatozov's "I Am Cuba," Pasolini's "Mamma Roma," Visconti's "Rocco and His Brothers" and F.W. Murnau's "Tabu." Its director of international sales is Fumiko Takagi.
