Game 5 a Fox Sports record

The final New York Yankees-Cleveland Indians playoff game Monday night set a new ratings record for Fox Sports coverage of first-round Major League Baseball playoffs.

The game garnered a 9.8 household rating and a 16 share against competition from ABC's "Monday Night Football," which scored a 13.9/23 in a mostly overlapping time period. Both contests seriously damaged CBS' male-skewing "Brooklyn South," which managed a 7.8/13, the network's worst result in the timeslot since 1989.

But the baseball results for Game 5 were a first-round best for Fox and the best on any network since regional coverage began in 1995. Fox's four games in the series averaged an 8.2, with results from a fifth weekend game on NBC yet to be factored in.

With the Indians' victory, potential candidates for the World Series (this year on NBC) are narrowed to Cleveland or Baltimore, which meet for the American League championship, and Atlanta or Florida, competing for the National League title.
