Holland Media Group names Porsius to head board

AMSTERDAM --- Dutch-based Holland Media Group (HMG) has tapped Dutch Broadcasting Company (NOB) director Pieter Porsius to head its executive board following the departure under duress of former chairman Huib Boermans.

Boermans left the company several months ago following allegations that he, along with former HMG director/secretary general Henri Roemer, had abused their positions while at HMG company RTL 4 by profiting from the sale of shares of the teletext company TeleWorld.

The resulting scandal also ended in the resignation of Freddy Thyes, the former SBS head of European television operations, although the allegations against Thyes pertained to when he worked at RTL 4 prior to taking up his position at SBS.

Porsius, who will step in to the new position on Jan. 1 of next year, was responsible for transforming NOB, the largest technical broadcast and post-production company in Holland, from a loss-making arm of the public broadcasters into a very profitable commercial operation which has cornered most of Holland's film and TV post-production work.

The scandal surrounding his predecessor is still taking its toll. Philips announced Monday that it would sell its 49.9% stake to TeleWorld director Frank Vaessen. KPN Multimedia also said it would sell up.

Both claimed the hiving off of shares was not related to the scandal, but the move from Philips was expected. Last summer Philips president Cor Boonstra had cited the scandal as pointing up types of business practices that Philips intended to avoid in the future.
