Motion Picture Assn. ratings hit 29 years
As of Nov. 1, the movie code has been in use for almost three decades --- rating a of total of 14,128 films. The system was launched in 1968 in a successful effort to head off regional censorship boards that were springing up around the country.
"In spite of almost daily criticism and carping by those in the industry and outside as well, the movie rating system has not only survived, it has prospered," said Motion Picture Assn. of America president Jack Valenti, who helped create the familiar movie code.
