Capitol drops black music unit

As expected, Capitol Records officially eliminated its black music division Thursday, incorporating the unit's sales, marketing and promotion arms into the label's overall structure.

Jean Riggins, VP/general manager of the division, will be leaving the company to pursue other interests, according to a statement.

The restructuring was announced by Capitol Records president CEO Gary Gersh, who termed the changes "a step toward establishing a broader music focus at Capitol."

The closing of the division had long been rumored, as Gersh continues to place his imprint on the executive suites in the Tower.

In a related move, Mickey Diage, an almost 30-year veteran at the label who left in late spring during a round of staff cuts, has returned to the helm of its in-house ad agency, Ninth Floor.
