At the time of his death, O'Neil was under contract with Viacom Pictures and had just completed a screenplay based on Dorothy Allison's 1992 novel "Bastard Out of Carolina."
O'Neil was a member of the Writers Guild of America.
His theatrical career began in 1975 at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, where , as a 10-year-old, he performed in "The Winter's Tale" and "Romeo and Juliet."
By 1982, O'Neil was artistic director of the small professional nonprofit theater organization New Playwrights Theater, in Oregon. At New Playwrights, several of O'Neil's plays were produced.
O'Neil was awarded a Drama-Logue Award in 1988 for "The House of Correction," which he directed. The next year, he was nominated for the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award.
Survived by his parents, Bill and Rita; a brother, sister and grandparents.
