Leibovitz nabs Dean docu grant

Documentary filmmaker Barbara Leibovitz received the Roy W. Dean Film Grant Award last week at the Directors Guild.

Leibovitz of L.A.-based From the Heart Prods. won the $ 5,000 prize to complete work on "Salvaged Lives," a doc about prisoners who enter a program to become professional divers.

Studio Film & Tape president Carole Dean established the grant last year to inspire new filmmakers who need financial assistance.

Judges selected Leibovitz and five finalists from more than 300 filmmakers across the country.

The judging panel included Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Barbara Trent; cinematographer Brianne Murphy; Fuji Motion Picture Products VP and general manager Hap Parker; television producer Jill Danton; and Concord Films VP Julie Corman.

The five finalists were: Karen Bartlett, Mary Beth Bresolin, Christopher C. Carson, Ted Faye and Robert Sheer.
