Studio insiders also report that a new spinoff series is in the works for the following season to pair with the latest clone, "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine."
But a Par spokesman would not confirm that "TNG" is about to come to the end of its firstrun life. He also terms as "purely speculative" reports about a new firstrun series.
It has been widely assumed all along that "TNG" would cease production after the upcoming season. Reports surfaced after the announcement of "Deep Space Nine" that there would be an 18-month production overlap between the two series.
The "Trek" franchise has been a highly lucrative one for Par. Although the programs traditionally trail King World's top-rated
"Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy!" in the household ratings, they are far out front in the critical younger-selling demos (with numbers that meet or exceed that of anything on network TV).
Although its TV run is reportedly winding to a close, "TNG" will enjoy an active afterlife. Stations that carry the firstrun episodes are committed to strip the reruns. Additionally, there have been numerous reports that a "TNG" feature film is on track for the latter part of fall '94.
