AMPAS board adds eight

Eight branch representatives -- including director Martha Coolidge, actor Gregory Peck and art director Albert Wolsky -- have been elected to the board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. Four governors have been re-elected.

All 12 are serving three-year terms, which begin Aug. 1.

Other branch reps include: Robert Daly (executives), Conrad Hall (cinematographers), Don Hall (sound), Frank Pierson (writers) and Arthur Schmidt (film editors).

Saul Bass (short films), Bruce Broughton (music), Howard W. Koch (producers) and Marvin Jay Levy (public relations) were the reelected governors. In all, there are three governors for each of the 12 branches, serving staggered terms.

Jonathan Erland was elected to a one-year, non-voting term representing the visual effects members of the Academy. AMPAS is continuing to explore the possibility of reorganizing the short films branch into an animation/visual effects branch.

Coolidge, Daly and Peck replace Gilbert Cates, Robert Rehme and Karl Malden, respectively, who have each served the maximum nine consecutive years as governors. Governors who've served three consecutive three-year terms must be on hiatus for at least a year before serving on the board again.

The remaining 24 governors, by branch: Carl Bell and June Foray (short films) , Alan Bergman and Arthur Hamilton (music), Ashley Boone and Frank Mancuso (executives), Robert F. Boyle and Jerry Wunderlich (art directors), Donn Cambern and Tom Rolf (film editors), Allen Daviau and Haskell Wexler (cinematographers),

Also, Sidney Ganis and Cheryl Boone Isaacs (public relations), Arthur Hiller and Norman Jewison (directors), Fay Kanin and Hal Kanter (writers), Jack Lemmon and Roddy McDowall (actors), Donald O. Mitchell and Donald C. Rogers (sound) and Saul Zaentz and Richard Zanuck (producers).
