Viacom sues over must-carry
The so-called "must-carry" rules were adopted by Congress as part of the 1992 Cable Act. The rule requires cable stations to broadcast signals of some TV stations, which would mean dropping a few popular cable stations.
"At its heart, this is a freedom of speech issue," said Viacom prez John Goddard.
The suit, filed in U.S. District Court, also claims the must-carry rule discriminates against cable operators and hinders their ability to develop new channels.
U.S. District Judge Eugene Lynch was set to hold a special hearing on the issue today.
