At the Bowl

Tonight's 1,000th "Arsenio Hall Show" celebration in the Hollywood Bowl was pretaped at the sold-out 15,000-seat-plus benefit last night.

Madonna headlines the show, which is her first musical performance on "Arsenio," although she has appeared twice before as a guest to plug movies.

Her two numbers, including a duet with Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, were also her Bowl bow.

Rap group Naughty by Nature, joined by Heavy D, and the British group Duran Duran also appear, punctuated by standup comic Marsha Warfield. The Arsenio Hall house band, the Posse, will have Sheila E. sitting in.

Profits from the ticket sales from last night's event go to the Magic Johnson Foundation, which funds organizations involved in AIDS education, care and research. Hall is on the board of the foundation. Corporate sponsors bought packages of tickets for inner-city kids, which were distributed by community and youth groups.

"We're introducing a whole new audience to the Hollywood Bowl. Our audience is probably not a philharmonic audience," notes Kim Swann, AH Communications VP of TV. "Mounting a show this size and still doing regular daily shows is a big accomplishment for the company."

The regular "Aresenio Hall Show" production staff--exec in charge of production Milt Hoffman and producer Marla Kell Brown--also handled the Bowl show.
