Opera Assn., L.A. Festival lead local NEA grantees

The Music Center Opera, the Los Angeles Festival and the Inner City Cultural Center were among the big Los Angeles area winners in the latest round of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Music Center Opera Assn. received the biggest grant in the city, a $ 470, 000 matching grant to support an endowment campaign and for general operating costs.

In addition, the Los Angeles Philharmonic received a $ 175,000 grant and the Los Angeles Festival received $ 125,000.

The grants were part of a $ 53 million NEA package (Daily Variety, April 27). All the grants have to be matched with private funding.

The Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Dept. received $ 100,000, to support the establishment of seven regional arts councils.

In small theater, the Inner City Cultural Center received a grant of $ 50,000 to support ongoing programs in theater, music and dance, as well as an internship program. Plaza de la Raza received $ 35,000 for artistic fees and administrative expenses for the 1993-94 season.

In addition, the Bilingual Foundation of the Arts received $ 9,500 for the second-phase development of an opera, "Lorca, Child of the Moon," based on the plays and poems of Federico Garcia Lorca.
