ABC confirms daytime slot
ABC TV Network Group president Robert Iger said in a statement that ABC wanted Swanson to devote his full attention "to the numerous upcoming and ongoing negotiations involving major sports properties."
Those rights include renewing "Monday Night Football" and bidding for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.
The network said a successor will be announced shortly. Mary Alice Dwyer-Dobbin, senior VP of daytime at ABC, is viewed as a candidate, as is Pat Fili, senior VP of programming at the Lifetime cable web, which is one-third owned by ABC.
Fili was reportedly considered to become ABC's head of movies and miniseries in 1991, before senior VP Judd Parkin was promoted to run that department.
Swanson, who last month gave up responsibility for children's programs, had steered daytime since December 1990.
