VSDA board backs bid

A program that would affect retailer reimbursement by manufacturers has been endorsed by the Video Software Dealers Assn. board of directors.

Manufacturers will be urged to adopt, at a minimum advertised price, a program promoting a stable marketplace.

If adopted, manufacturers will not reimburse retailers under their co-op advertising policy if retailer ads contain pricing below the manufacturers' established minimums.

That and two other endorsements suggested by the VSDA retail advisory committee were made during March 4-6 board meetings in Orlando in conjunction with the National Assn. of Recording Merchandisers convention.

VSDA also recommended that any product licensed by manufacturers for sale through mail order should not be available to consumers through clubs until the product is priced for sell-through by all video retailers. The board also asked that product sold through the mail be clearly identified and permanently marked as such.

Finally, the board wants product clearly identified as extended-play or long-play.

In other business, the board endorsed the Video Industry AIDS Action Committee's fund-raising campaign, A Penny for AIDS, from Nov. 24-Dec. 1 (World AIDS Awareness Day).

The committee will solicit one penny for each video transaction; for example, retailers will be asked for a penny for each rental or purchase, distributors a penny for each vid shipped or invoiced. Consumers will be asked for contributions.
