Chicago film critics yesterday named "Malcolm X" best picture of the year and its star, Denzel Washington, best actor.
Emma Thompson was named best actress for her role in "Howards End" and Robert Altman won the award for best director for "The Player."
The Chicago Film Critics Assn. comprises about 40 print and broadcast film critics in the Chicago area, who vote on the awards.
O'Donnell most promising
Other awards went to Chris O'Donnell, who took the most promising actor award for his performances in "Scent of a Woman" and "School Ties." Marisa Tomei was named most promising actress for her roles in "My Cousin Vinny" and "Chaplin."
Best supporting actor went to Jack Nicholson for "A Few Good Men."
Best supporting actress was awarded to Judy Davis for her performance in "Husbands and Wives."
"The Crying Game" was named the year's best foreign film.
