The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences unveiled the look for the upcoming 65th Annual Oscar Show yesterday.
A model performance
While the show's producer Gilbert Cates, director Jeff Margolis, writer Hal Kanter and the Acad's president Robert Rehme looked on, production designer Robert Keene unveiled a miniature working model of the Academy Awards set.
"I wanted to develop a set using the poster that Saul Bass designed as a starting point," Keene said.
"I wanted to translate it to the set. We want to be glamorous.
That's the basis of the design. It alludes to the glory days of Hollywood."
Two podiums
Keene said that the set, which will have two podiums -- one for host Billy Crystal, the others for presenters -- and that the set will go into 20 different configurations.
Keene went on to show the two large towers that will revolve and eventually reveal huge Oscar statues contained within.
'A dramatic entrance'
"That will be used for a dramatic entrance for one of the stars," Keene said.
"Like Jaye Davidson," quipped Cates, referring to the best supporting actor nominee.
Building sets
According to Keene, Warner Bros., NBC and ABC are all currently building the massive sets for the show.
He also said that the sets for the musical numbers are still being designed.
