The Writers Guild of America West is seeking a federal court order barring distribution of the film "Cliffhanger" until it makes a final determination on a story screen credit.
The WGAW, in a petition filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, says that Carolco Production Services Inc. has so far refused to provide written assurance that it will abide by a Feb. 3 order by arbitrator Edgar A. Jones Jr. halting distribution of the film until the Guild makes its ruling.
The credit in dispute, as listed in Carolco's notice of tentative writing credits, reads: "Based on a Story by Gene Hines and John Long."
A guild arbitration claim, however, notes that Carolco originally bought a screenplay for the film from writer Michael France and that Hines and Long did not provide source material.
