GLADWYNE, Pa. (AP) -- C. Wanton Balis Jr., who spent more than a quarter-century helping guide the Philadelphia Orchestra, died Feb. 4.
He was 86.
Balis was president of the Academy of Music for 10 years and president or chairman of the Philadelphia Orchestra Association for 25, ending in 1980.
He founded a reinsurance firm, Balis & Co., in the early 1940s and sold it in 1977. He continued to run it until his retirement in 1989.
