Archerd to be honored with charity benefit

Tonight Daily Variety columnist Army Archerd will be honored at a charity benefit at the Beverly Hilton Hotel for his 40 years writing the pillar Just For Variety.

The black-tie salute will benefit three of Archerd's personal charities--Concern Foundation for Cancer Research; the ERAS Center for children at risk; and Victoria Village, a residence and vocational school for developmentally disabled adults.

"When I married Army, he became pulled into the world of children with great problems," Selma Archerd explains. "I have an autistic son." Mrs. Archerd is one of the co-chairpersons of the event committee. "It was extremely important to us that if Army was going to be honored, it was going to be for charity."

Among those set to appear at the all-industry tribute are Roseanne and Tom Arnold, Warren Beatty, Candice Bergen, Kirk Douglas, Faye Dunaway, Anthony Hopkins, Michele Lee, Jack Lemmon, Jay Leno, Gregory Peck, Sidney Poitier, Robert Stack and Dick Van Dyke, according to show producer Pierre Cossette.

Neil Perlman, Entertainment Group senior VP/group publisher for Cahners Publishing Co.--the parent company of Daily Variety--noted, "We are thrilled to be able to honor Army's 40 years with Daily Variety and at the same time contribute awareness and needed funds to three important charities."

Peter Bart, VP/editorial director, Variety-Daily Variety, added, "Over four decades, Army has imbued his column with a love of showbiz and a compassion for its denizens. He's long overdue for his moment in the spotlight."

Both Perlman and Bart are members of the event committee, which also includes Marty Golden, chairperson; Rebecca Golden and Dr. Wilbur Schwartz, co-chairpersons; Pierre Cossette, Barbara Cull, Pattikay Lee, Brad Lemack and Carolyn Machado Richard.
